Identify classes of service

Generally, airlines can offer four main classes of service:

  • Economy

  • Premium economy

  • Business

  • First

Some airlines may differentiate within a class and, in addition to the standard service, may offer a superior service within the same cabin.

However, not all airlines offer all classes; some airlines have two classes and others may only have one. Classes may vary on different routes with varying aircraft types.

Economy class

Economy is the main class of service offered; the service provided at the airport and onboard may vary from airline to airline. Some airlines subdivide the class into economy and premium economy.

Premium economy class

Comfort is important to most travelers. Also known as an elite economy class or economy plus class, premium economy is a step up from economy but not as expensive as first or business class.

A premium economy fare is generally less expensive than a business class fare. You will not have the same level of service or comfort as business class, but you will be assured a more comfortable and relaxing journey. A typical premium economy fare includes around 5-7 inches of extra legroom, wider seats, and more space to recline. A separate food menu and enhanced entertainment may also be included with premium economy.

Business class

For most airlines, business class is superior to economy class, offering speedier airport check-in, airport lounge facilities, more comfortable onboard seating, superior meal service, and in-flight entertainment. Go beyond the curtain and discover a world of comfy seats, lie-flat seats, chef-created multi-course menus, attentive service, and free-flowing champagne. Business class is a significant upgrade over economy or premium economy class.

First class

First class is a travel class on some passenger airliners intended to be more luxurious than business, premium economy, and economy classes. First class is the highest class offered, although some airlines have branded new products as above first class. First class is the premier class offered by some airlines, and they usually provide individual check-in facilities, airport lounge facilities, superior seating and meal service, and individual in-flight entertainment.
