Galileo Canada provides hardware, operating systems and software
applications for the exclusive purpose of accessing the Apollo host
reservation system. It employs various measures including strong
encryption and tunneling protocols to ensure that host data is maintained
with a maximum of security. Your day to day Apollo transactions remain
safe and secure in our new environment.
Customers who choose to use our leased equipment and operating systems
to house 3rd party applications or data are reminded to take
responsibility for protecting these programs and files.
Galileo Canada will not assume responsibility for the functionality or
security of applications, data files or any media installed or placed on
its leased equipment. We do not provide additional components, upgrades or
software adjustments to accommodate the functionality of 3rd
party applications not provided by Galileo Canada.
Galileo Canada retains a contract with its technical service provider
for the maintenance of its leased equipment and operating systems
throughout the life of your contract. The agreement covers only equipment,
operating system and applications as they were presented to your agency at
the beginning of your contract.
In accordance with your Apollo contract, we have the right to forward
to your agency any charges associated with restoring Galileo Canada owned
equipment and applications to functionality where our technical
representatives have determined the failure was not caused by the original
hardware/software package provided to your agency by Galileo Canada.
The advent of e-mail and the ability to attach files to e-mail creates
the possibility of dangerous payloads, such as viruses, that can spread
quickly throughout your network and in some cases cause considerable harm
to your valuable data. Once infected it can prove difficult to clean your
PC’s and often damaged files can not be recovered. The best protection
you can offer your business from these threats is through the use of
reliable anti-virus software. Galileo Canada strongly recommends that you
purchase and install anti-virus software on each workstation that is
connected to the internet.
Consider the following when choosing your software package:
- It offers frequent updates to protect against new viruses.
- It offers information about the newest virus threats.
- It can scan e-mail attachments for virus threats as e-mails arrive.
- It offers a rescue disk.
- It offers the ability to schedule scans of hard drives.
- It can not be easily or accidentally disabled.
Ensure that you purchase software that meets at least the minimum
requirements of your computer equipment. You can locate the details of
your computer equipment by double clicking on the "system icon"
in control panel. Be sure to check the system information for all the
computers on your network as each computer may have different versions of
Windows.
Another important consideration when assessing your businesses security
needs is your vulnerability to having your file system invaded by the
outside internet, generally referred to as being "hacked". The
arrival of broadband technologies such as DSL and cable can bring great
benefits in terms of "access speed" but in some cases, can also
expose your file systems to outside threats. Many of these systems use
static ip addressing and are considered an "always on" type of
connection, as long as your computer is on there is the possibility that
your files may be exposed to anyone browsing your IP address. Galileo
Canada encourages you to contact your internet service provider to obtain
details of how your office is connected.
Some simple measures you can take to limit the threat of being hacked:
- Power off all workstations that are connected to the internet after business hours.
- Protect your data files with strong passwords. Strong passwords are
a minimum of 6 characters and mix upper, lower case letters,
numbers
and often punctuation symbols. The longer the password and
the more
combinations of letters, digits and symbols make it
increasingly
difficult to access. Remember to keep your passwords in
a safe place.
Consider installing a firewall application. A firewall can act as a
barrier between your office and the open internet. Configured properly, a
firewall will allow your business out on the internet and hide your data
and practices from other users on the internet. A firewall will also alert
you to anyone who may be attempting to access your data. Many affordable
off the shelf firewalls applications are available. Galileo Canada
encourages you to consult with your internet service provider for firewall
recommendations.
Other ways you can protect your data:
Maintaining a regular backup of your most regularly used data files is
strongly recommended. Galileo Canada encourages you to back-up your files
often to protect yourself from software corruption or hardware failure
issues that may sometimes arise.
