Overview
An error may occur during the installation of Galileo Desktop which indicates a file required to complete the installation is missing. Note, the instructions here are intended for people with a medium to high level of expertise in working with Windows and the installation of software.
Issue
The installation of Galileo Desktop is usually done from software downloaded from http://support.galileo.com/SGC/APS/softlib/ ., The .EXE file is a self-extracting, self-installation executable. The file extracts to a folder defined by Windows as a temporary place to put files it only needs to complete an installation and which will be removed after the installation is complete. This folder is usually defined as the %temp% variable, and it's location varies by the version of Windows and how Windows was installed. Microsoft's Windows Installer also comes into play. The "cannot find file" error may occur If the contents or location of the temp folder are corrupt or the Microsoft installer isn't current or a previous installation of Galileo Desktop or other software hasn't "cleaned up" properly.
Solution
- Make sure the folders defined by the %temp% and %tmp% variables exist
- Delete the contents of the %temp% folder(s)
- Make sure you have Microsoft .NET v2.0 installed. If not, download and install this from http://www.microsoft.com/downloadS/details.aspx?familyid=79BC3B77-E02C-4AD3-AACF-A7633F706BA5&displaylang=en
- Download and install the latest Microsoft Installer for the version of Windows you are using. For newer versions of Windows, this is most likely to be v4.5 from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloadS/details.aspx?familyid=5A58B56F-60B6-4412-95B9-54D056D6F9F4&displaylang=en For older versions of Windows, Microsoft Installer v3.1 from http://www.microsoft.com/downloadS/details.aspx?familyid=889482FC-5F56-4A38-B838-DE776FD4138C&displaylang=en.
- Run the Microsoft Windows Installer CleanUp Uitility http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301
- Download the Galileo Desktop CD image file. This is the .ISO file on the Galileo Desktop software download page. Use this .ISO image to create a CD of the Galileo Desktop software and (re)run the Galileo Desktop installation from the CD.
