Microsofts Windows 7

Microsoft's Windows 7

General Comments

This page is intended to provide information and assistance for Travelport customers running Microsoft's
Windows 7 operating system who are using Travelport software to connect to the Apollo and Galileo host systems..

In general, if the Travelport software works properly on Windows Vista, that same software will work properly on the corresponding release of Windows 7. Conversely, if there are issues or a required work around to use a particular Travelport software product on Vista, those issues or the work around remain with Windows 7.

Examples:
  • Galileo Desktop v1.01 and above works properly on both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows Vista. And, Galileo Desktop works properly on both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 7.
  • Galileo Print Manager will not work on 64-bit versions of Windows XP/Vista and the same is true wih 64-bit versions of Windows 7.

Windows 7 Specific

Control Panel

With Windows 7, Microsoft has changed the method used to access Control Panel applets, such as the Galileo TCP/IP applet which is used to configure Galileo Desktop.

At first glance, it may not be apparent where to find the Galileo TCP/IP configuration applet. By default, Control Panel looks like what you see here. Notice there is no list of applets, Notice the Category drop down in the upper right hand area of Control Panel

Select the  down arrow (˅ symbol) and then select either Small Icons or Large Icons from the menu. The view of Control Panel changes to what you see below. You can now see and use the Galileo TCP/IP icon to configure Galileo Desktop.

Configuring Galileo Print Manager on the 32-bit versions of Window 7 (x86)
Windows 7 (x86) - The 32-bit versions of Windows 7

Note, Galileo Print Manager (GPM) cannot be used on 64-bit versions of Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7. However, Windows 7 Professional and Windows 7 Ultimate include what Microsoft refers to as "Windows XP Mode". Windows XP Mode provides a 32-bit Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (SP3) environment pre-loaded on a virtual hard disk.

This "mode' allows you to run GPM in a "virtual machine". See Microsoft's web sites for more details on setting up a virtual XP computer inside of Windows 7 Professional or Windows 7 Ultimate. Once you have a working "XP Mode" virtual computer, GPM is installed on the "virtual machine" and configured the same way it is on any other 32-bit versions of Windows.

Configuration Note

During a fresh installation of Windows 7, the primary user account is given administrator rights. The user login is a member of the Administrator group. Configuring Galileo Print Manager (GPM) cannot be done with an administrator equivalent account. Configuration must be performed using the actual Administrator account.

Steps to accomplish this task
  • First, the Administrator account must be enabled.
    • From the Start Menu, right click the Computer icon, then select Manage. If User Access Control is enabled (the default), answer yes to the question about accessing the Manage option.
    • Expand the Users group by clicking on the > character in front of Local Users and Groups
    • Right click the Administrator account and select Set Password. Select "Proceed" when prompted with the alert about setting passwords. Assign a password to the Administrator account.
    • Right click the Administrator account a second time and select Properties
    • Remove the check marks from in front of all options, specifically the Account Is Disabled option must be unchecked.
    • Select Apply and then OK

  • Now you must login using the Administrator account.
  • From the Start menu, select Shutdown and then either log off and log back into Windows using the name "Administrator" or select Switch User and log in using the just enable Administrator account.

  • You may now configure GPM to use specific COM ports for airline ticket printers, specific Windows printers for Itineraries, Invoices and Hard Copies, and set up MIR to Disk for back office/mid-office accounting systems.
  • See Galileo Print Manager for software and installation instructions. for software and detailed instructions.
  • Once you have GPM configured, log out of the Administrator account, and log back into Windows using your normal, day to day login account.
  • You may now use GPM as you would on previous versions of Windows.
  • Note, for security reasons, Travelport and Microsoft strongly suggest you go back into computer management and disable the Administrator account.
